Managing Editor Turns 54, Alien Coworker Thinks It's Silly

Wes, the managing editor of this fine satirical website, turned 54 today. His alien coworker, Steve, who is from a planet where years are 17 Earth years long, thinks it's silly that humans celebrate birthdays every year.

"Why do you humans celebrate birthdays so much?" Steve asked Wes. "On my planet, we only celebrate birthdays every 17 years. That's because each year is so long and significant. It's like celebrating 2 decades on your planet."

Wes tried to explain to Steve that birthdays are a way for humans to mark the passage of time and to celebrate the lives of their loved ones. But Steve just didn't understand.

"I don't see the point," he said. "Why not just celebrate your life every 17 years? That would be much more meaningful."

Wes sighed. "I guess you'll never understand," he said. "But happy birthday anyway."

Steve smiled. "Thanks," he said. "But I think I'm going to go call my mom and ask her to make me another birthday cake. It's been 10 minutes since I last had one."
